Situated on the desert road between Isfahan and shiraz, the small town of Abadeh has long been known as the knotting centre of high quality items in designs evolved either from the sophisticated workshop carpets of Isfahan or from the tribal traditions of the nomads of the Fars province – notably those of the Qashqa’i and Khamseh tribal groups – who bring their works in for barter in the Abadeh bazaar. Here, the influence of Qashqa’i art is readily apparent in the highly abstract composition, with the skills of the Abadeh weavers bringing a balance and symmetry to the ancient nomadic scheme which is most appealing to the eye. The renowned dyestuffs and firm knotting construction which distinguish authentic Abadeh creations add further to this work’s decorative flair.
